ED Fairmont, headlights cutting out

My ED has a prob when you put the headlights on high beam, after about 30sec-1min they cut out for a sec then come back on. Then 5sec later they cut out and come back on.

Sometimes if you leave them on (hi-beams) they flicker in and out.

If you turn the beams off, it stops. the normal headlights work fine.

What could this be? Faulty relay?

Hi There, your lights cut out and back in because of a circuit breaker which auto resets once it's cooled off a bit - it's there of course to protect the headlite circuit from frying, but these CB's are notorious for getting cranky. A major reason for them going stupid is simply poor contact at the spade terminal connectors on them.

There have been previous posts on the topic - so you might want to look at those too.

In my case I fixed the problem by simply pulling off the terminals and cleaning up the tangs - did that 3 months ago and haven't had any more drop outs since.

The gizmo itself is a silver/grey thing roughly the same size as a relay (maybe more like two relays stuck together actually) and it's attached to the rear end of the set of the relay block located next to the battery.

I changed it to a 40amp breaker, up from the 30amp. I will clean the terminals too. Whats the best way of doing this? Using some fine sandpaper?

Hmm - if you're still getting cutout after replacing the breaker then there might actually be a short somewhere in the HiBeam circuit?

To clean the terminals, yep just some fine paper is the go - I also dabbed a bit of battery terminal gibbers on too ("Corrode Cure").

to clean the terminals also put some Bicarb soda powder into a cup and fill with boiling water, then hold the terminals in the water until they stop bubbling. This is the best way! Works for battery terminals too, when they have the copper sulphate(blue) powder all over them
