El itermittently won't start

Hello all, A friend of mine has a dead stock 4 litre EL Falcon. Intermittently it won't start because it isn't energising the fuel pump when the ignition is first turned on. Sometimes it will just cut out whilst driving too.

When the car won't run there is no power going to the fuel pump.

Usually you can get the car started by turning the ignition off & on until you hear the fuel pump kick in. We have tried a known good fuel pump relay but it doesn't fix the problem.

Anyone got any ideas? I've been told it's the fuel pump but that does not ring true because when the pump doesn't run for that second after the ignition is turned on (on the occasions when the car won't start) there is no power to the pump & a stuffed pump should not give an indication of no power going to it. Thanks Jim..

Re: El itermittently won't start

check the wires for cracks. there was a guy with a similar problem only it was his battery. used to short out in left handers and stall the car. then when he stoped and the leads straigthned out, he'd turn the key ant it would start. took him weeks to find the problem.
also check the voltage at the pump and try couple of different relays. checking the fuel pump wouldnt hurt either.

Is the back seat squishing the wires or are they fouled by something somewhere? Does it happen more when you go over a bump or under any particular physical conditions?

It might pay to check the pcm is giving the earth to the fuel pump relay next time the plays up. If it's not getting the earth it could be a tfi or pcm issue.
