EL stereo installation gone wrong

Hey all, any help much appreciated.

My EL GLi 97 model is screwed. Here's the story.

Well, i've removed my factory head unit. After doing this the car won't start.

The engine will start to turn over but doesn't actually fire.

Any ideas?

Also the wiring list I got was didn't include two colours, so I need to know what turqoise is and what black with pink stripe is.

The smartlock light is not on.

The horn beeped about 5 times in quick succession too. What the hell is going on.

No remote locking or boot.

Have I blown a fuse? Or done something really wrong.

By the sounds of it you have blown the fuse.
This fuse wont let you start the car.
It will ither be the radio fuse or the interior light fuse.
I know ive been there and done it.
Very embarasing when the RACV come out to change a fuse.

Thanks for the heads up...

I'll try that but I still don't see how that affects the engine from starting.

Will try that now.

I have a feeling the black and pink wire is related to the ignition coil. connect it back up and see what happens. What did you do to that wire?

Yes definately check the fuses first.

Why did you play with wires if you didnt know what they were for?
Im going to go look at my gregorys.

Re: EL stereo installation gone wrong

Ok, i've calmed down a bit now. Had a bit of "Just bought the thing and did a simple thing and now its screwed totally" paranoia.

I re-traced my steps and realised one major thing. I didn't disconnect the battery before starting on the electricals, and I was working with the doors open. Idiot!

Anyway, i've checked the fuses like you advised. And, like you guessed, the courtesy light 10amp fuse was blown. REALLY blown. It's the only fuse gone. The fusebox in the engine bay is fine.

The smartlock immobiliser isn't engaged, as far as I can tell. For starters, the engine is turning, but just not starting. I've read in the manual that this doesn't happen if smartlock is on. Also, the dash smartlock light is not on.

The central locking remote key button doesn't work, the internal lock button doesn't work either. I can lock the car with the key though. Same goes for the boot.

The stereo is wired up fine, i'm just lost on two wires- and it happens to be the most important one. The power wire. I am unsure as to what the turquoise wire and the black with pink stripe wire is related to.

I have touched no other wiring, these were all out of the factory head unit wiring plugs. The smaller plug controls the rear speakers, and the larger plug controls the power, accessories link, earth, dimmer, illumination and front speakers for the factory head unit.

Now according to my guide, these are the wires:
Blue/ white stripe = Accessories 12v. This is a heavier gauge wire.
Green/ yellow stripe = Battery 12v.

But I don't have the green with yellow stripe wire, I just have a smaller gauge green/turquoise wire and another, unlisted wire which is black with a pink stripe.

I noticed that the same blue with white striped wire is going into the cigarette lighter, with a black earth. Should the lighter be running off accessories power?

Any help appreciated, especially as to wire colour meanings.

Re: EL stereo installation gone wrong

K, just looked at the larger plug on the factory head unit, and the wires i'm unsure of are marked numbers 6 and 2

The numbers are moulded into the white plastic plug itself. Very small, have to get it in the light the right way.

Re: EL stereo installation gone wrong

I would expect the lighter to run off accessories power ( should be powerless when no keys in ignition ).
If you've got a multimeter, it might be the easiest way to test for power at various stages (i.e. with accessories power and when it is off completely). I would expect (can't guarantee) that the smaller gauge wire will be the perm 12v source from the battery to keep memory alive etc, and the larger gauge should be main power that is switched from accessories (i.e. only worked when car in acc or started).

The smartlock system runs off the fuse from the courtesy / internal lights (which is why when the dome light isn't working your generally not going anywhere (check this is working now)), and of course smartlock is designed to stop the car from being stolen. The ECU won't start the car without getting info from the Smartlock module - so no power to smartlock (or missing smartlock module) = no go.
