hey ppl
i stumbled onto this site so im kinda new but i despratly need help!.

i have a 87 XF falcon station waggon, auto collum shift.

i need some info / help on how, if possible to fix a XF speedo.
it works... but not very well, it never comes on when you start the car
even then it takes ages to come on, then when it does show a sign of life it
ether switches on and off all the time or it
shows a far lower speed than you are actually traveling.

if i can i would like to fix it my self by adjusting a cable, bracket or even
replacing somthing with a
second hand part,and not have to fork out a hefty
mecanic bill. becouse im a bit strapped for cash.

The XF speedo is electronic. No cable. Your problem could be in a number of places. First place I'd check is the connection at the gear box. You should be able to see a 'thing' bolted to the side with three wires coming out - that's the sender (not to be confused with the reverse switch - 2 wires).

Check that the cabling is in good condition and the connector that plugs into the main loom is plugged in properly.

If all is ok below, then it could be in the dash itself. They are not hard to pull apart if you're handy with small parts, but if it turns out to be the dash unit, it's probably just as easy and cheap to replace the dash. Hardest part of that job is finding the two screws that hold the bottom of the dash in - you'll need a torch or worklamp.......

thanx a heap i will try and put the car up on some ramps
and have a look at that wire / connection.
what if the wire if in bad condition.
how much would a replacment dash be? APROX?

Follow the wires from the sender and they will join into an umbilical plug about 30cm away. Make sure the plug contacts are clean - they can get oiled up or rusty. Sounds like a dodgy connection??

The actual sender could be faulty.

Either wouldn't be too expensive to replace. Just phone around a heap of wreckers and get the cheapest price. You should be able to buy the speedo second hand by itself and just swap them over.

Real easy job and all you'll need is probably a screw driver for the dash.

the sender stuffs up more often i think (correct me if wrong), so get it tested or replace it, they prob wouldnt cost much either

sorry its been a while but ive been away

i had a fiddle with the connections and the sender wires
but nothing was wrong. i also had a look at the dash
conection it seems all ok.
after i cleaned them all i went for a drive and no luck.
so im still skrewed

Pull the sender out of the gearbox and check the cog.

Shine a torch into the gearbox hole and make sure you can see the splines on another big cog which drives the small one.

As mentioned the sender itself may have died. Cheap replacement from the wreckers.

Dash speedometer may have died, again a cheap replacement item.

Undo the retaining bolt.

If it's never been removed it could take a little persueding! Assuming you've taken off the small retaining bolt.

Grab the whole sender with some multi-grips or vice-grips. Try to rotate it and "break" the tight seal. Then it should hopefull slide out.

Could aslo slide a long screw inbetween the side of the sender and that small 90 degree retaining bracket. This may help you lever it out. Be careful not to totally break off the small bracket, they're not held on too strong.
