if you mean the pot with a fan in the middle then thats the one thats run off the sensor in the coolant bottle. the one thats lights up like a thermometer (i think, havnt had mine this hot) is when its too hot.

I see. Does it just register the coolant level or something else? ill probly just replace it but would be nice if there was some other quick fix to save me the drive to the wreckers (im lazy)

Yes its a coolant level sensor.
They have a habbit of getting very fine cracks in them with age.
They start to fill up a little, then progresively fill up totaly.
They cost about $50 from ford.
I bought a new one when mine started playing up, but then it stopped.

Check your oil as well and make sure there isn't any white parts in it.
I remember when that light came on for me all the time in the old EA and it was the head gasket.

Nah im sure its not the headgasket thank god.
I put in a copper gasket just in case when i got the head reco'ed
