When the lights are on and I push the brakes, my right hand brake light comes on brighter as you'd expect, but the left light goes out completely - no brake light, no tail light.
If anyone has any idea what to do about this I'd appreciate it! I can't see the bulb as being the problem but I'm not sure what in the electrics could cause it.

It's possible you have a bad earth connection on the left side.
Without the tail lights on the brake light earths through the tail light,
and the tail light can earth through the brake light.
But with both the tail lights and brake lights on on the voltage to both globes is the same, so no power flow.
You have to have a difference in voltage across a component for power to flow.
