The wife was driving along the other day and suddenly "clunk", the ashtray falls out! It's one of the stupidest designs I've ever seen! For months it has refused to lock into the closed position but now it has simply fallen completely out and I cant get it back in no matter what I try!
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, should I just go and buy a new ashtray from Ford or is there a fix that I'm missing here?

i think they were recalled or something.
when mine played up i putan ef series 2 ashtray and facia in.
they are the same as el and are good if you use the lighter but not the ashtray !!

p.s if you do this conversion you will need the face, the ashtray and the little ball it clicks into.

otherwise i still have my ef1 ashtray works perfect (grey) just didn't like it !!

how much was the ef 2 ashtray and facia? I had the same problem with my but lost my temper trying to put the ashtray back in and broke something on it.. I wouldent mind upgrading to the EF2 ashtray and facia, what difference is there between the EF2 ashtray and facia??

cant remember how much was many years ago
ef1 ashtray folds down with ashtray and lighter socket all in 1.
if you need to use the lighter you have to open the smelly ashtray
ef2 and el the ashtray is seperate from the lighter. the lighter is always accesable and the ashtray can be opened seperate.

i suppose it is personal preferance

v8capri is correct, the EF up to 12/95 had an ashtray lid that covered the cig-lighter as well. this is not available anymore (new) and must be replaced by EF2/EL type. This involves changing the whole radio/ashtray surround assy, which includes a mondeo type ashtray. this will cost you about $115.

Yeah, i did this conversion and i must say it was worth it.. I got the facia at trade so it cost me $80 or so..

I was missing the little ballbearing when i picked the box up from ford, so make sure you remind them about it.. Otherwise your ashtray will not stay right when you take the lighter out to use it..

Anyone got a pic of the EF S1 ashtry thing? I have an EL, and im curious as to what the EF1 looks like if it covers the lighter aswell.
