unknown wires

i have a six seat ea wagon. im trying to intall neons under my dash and there is are 4 spare wires which im guessing would usualy go to the
t-bar. would these wires just be for lights or what? they are-

black
green with yellow stripe
brown
blue with red/purple stripe

Which ones would i use to power a neon? also where else could i get power from to run them?
thanks guys

Re: unknown wires

You Could use the green with yellow stripe as it is a constant power wire and the black for ground. however you will need to run a switch so as to be able to turn it off use the green/yellow wire for that. you could use an electric antena switch for a neat instalation.

Re: unknown wires

thanks for your help. i tried the wires myself and found that yes the black is a ground, but the green is not constant- it is switched with your parker lights and doors so its on the interior lights circuit. what i realy want is constant power so i could switch it myself and have more control. are there any wires under the dash that arnt used, or others i could tap into? these neons only use 3W so power draw aint a problem. thanks for your help again.

Re: unknown wires

ok you now have 2 options, if you have a clock you could use the red/green wire this wire is active when the ignition is on or use the green/yellow wire which is constant power for the clock. the other alternative is to use the constant power wire running off your radio which remembers your radio station if it is a factory radio the wire colour should be green/yellow if it has an aftermarket radio the wire colour is usualy just plain yellow. this is why i thought that the green/yellow wire from youre plug was constant because the other constant wires in the dash are the same colours anyway hope this helps you.

Re: unknown wires

To tap into the wires use a pair of wire strippers and gently seperate the plastic around the wire exposing the copper then strip the end of the wire you want to use and wrap it around the wire. you can then solder it together and put some black electrical tape around it or just tape it what ever your capable of. as for the black wires they are ground. all black wires in the car is ground. when you mean strobe light do you mean a flashing L.E.D. to signify that the alarm is active, if you do their should be an output from your alarm to hook this up. dont know what colour the wire would be or how to hook it up as i have no experience with alarm systems. dont know about a power source that becomes active when the car is turned off either. never needed one.
