frown Weird electrical problem (XD)

Hiya... got me some more problems. The XD and XE have a volt meter as one of the dials on the dash. From memory it shows 10-16V, and the needle for me sits in the middle. Unlike my mates XE, where his doesn't move much, mine swings wildly when I use my indicator (drops ~1V, then comes back as the light goes on and off), brake lights take ~2.5V's off it, as does most other electrical lights and the demister, etc.

However, I just left that as a quirk seeing as my car has always done that, yet it starts fine and everything works... But now there's something new. The volt meter shoots as far as it can go to the right (16V ++), the lights on the radio go extra bright, my headlights might as well be xenons for the brightness they give, and it generally scares me that something is going to blow up.

If I drop the revs to ~300-500RPM, then I can see the needle come back to 15-16V, so it's somehow getting a whole lot more power from the alternator.

It's probably a loose wire, as it seems to be triggered by motion MOST of the time... but I'm lost. Any suggestions on what to look for before I take it to a mechanic?

Thanks,
-Truffles

Pretty much what YellowXF said...

have a look at the back of the alternator...you should see a black box held in with two screws...that is the regulator!

Replacing that should fix it...and not too expensive..round the $25 mark
