the XD i've recently bought has a few problems, one of them being the odometer and trip meter don't work. the speedo works fine, and I always thought they were related? any ideas?

You'll find that there is a cog stripped inside the speedo. Usually happens with age (the plastic breaks down) and someone pressing the trip reset whilst the vehicle is moving.
Most good instrument repair places have the cogs in stock and can sell you one.

Yep, mine does this too! Either fix it like 50LtCapri said or just go to a wreckers and buy a new speedo/odometer. They would be really cheap and are very simple to change over.
My dad's had this fault - for approx 80-90,000km! I don't think he was too disappointed, but then the speedo also quit so he got it fixed. Traded the car with 250k showing...

Only problem with most of the second hand ones arround is that they have not had the cog replaced and eventually break anyway, if not already broken.
Usually cheaper to buy just the cog anyway and replace it your self, last time I bought some they were $1.00 each.
Even at $10.00 each it's cheaper than what most wreckers want for the speedo.

So it isn't really worth it to replace the cluster - I've got a whole instrument cluster sitting in the boot, but I don't know the condition of the thing. If it only involves a few hours with a gregory's and some screwdrivers then I might give it a go. I guess I'd better have a look for the broken bits first!
I'd look for the broken cog first or possibly replace it anyway. The original cogs are a soft plastic and it breaks down with age.
My thoughts on it are that the soft cog is designed as a fail safe and designed to strip if the odo jams. However ones I've done have had no problems even after 100000k's use.
It is easy to check.
Take the front clear lens off, unscrew the speedo unit from the back, gently pull the speedo unit out. Unscrew the inner speedo section from the black section and carfully lift it out, there are three wires that run from the speedo to the black part.
The cog is usually and orange colour compared to the rest which will be generally white.
I'll post some photos on monday or tuesday showing the steps and items pulled apart.

With the spare cluster, just unscrew the rubbery square dash cover, then a few dash cluster retaining screws. There are 2 umbilical plugs on the back. Unplug them, and refit your new dash. Having done it many times, I'd say 15 minutes!........maybe 30 for a first timer!
yeah i had a look at the spare, turns out its missing half the teeth on the orange gear (driven by the worm off the motor, yeah?). So they are both screwed!! Now all I need is to find somewhere in Canberra that'll give me the gear...
