Mazda Puts Out For Mazdaspeed Protege And Prices The Mazda6
TCC/11-05-02
Mazda is putting its power behind the 2003 1/2 Mazdaspeed Protégé at this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association's (SEMA) show. The hotted-up compact makes its debut at the show today, wearing new front and rear skirts, a spoiler and exhaust tips. Underneath the hood is a Callaway-prepared 170-hp four-cylinder, ated to a five-speed manual and a limited-slip differential. The 17-inch Racing Harts get Bridgestone Potenza tires, and the 450-watt CD stereo has MP3 capability and is pre-wired for Sirius satellite radio reception. Just 2500 copies will be made for North America; pricing isn’t confirmed, but the Protégé gets a three-year/50,000 mile warranty.
Meanwhile, back in Irvine, Mazda says the new 6 sport sedan will begin at $18,530. The new 6 comes in two editions — “i” and “s” — each sporting its own array of standard features. The $18,530 6i gets a 160-hp four-cylinder and five-speed manual, with 16-inch wheels, power windows/locks/mirrors, a CD player and four-wheel disc brakes. The 6s adds a 220-hp V-6, anti-lock brakes, traction control, a power driver seat, alloy wheels and an alarm, all for $21,100. All 6 sedans carry Mazda’s new four-year/50,000-mile warranty, which also includes 24-hour roadside assistance, loaner cars during service calls and five years of rust protection.
