IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Mazda North American Operations
(MNAO) and MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development today announced a drag racing partnership with Team Bergenholtz. Professional drag racer Ed Bergenholtz, a 13-year veteran and record-setting driver for Honda, has traded in his Honda
colors for Mazda's "winged-M." Begenholtz will debut his new MAZDA6 Pro Class FWD drag car in Las Vegas at the Specialty Equipment Market Association's (SEMA) annual hot rod expo. The agreement commences next year and includes an all-new 2003 MAZDA6 as a featured MAZDASPEED drag car to compete in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA), as well as in other professional sport compact drag racing series.

In showroom form, the new 2.3 liter I-4, 16 valve (DOHC) with variable valve timing (VVT) 4-cylinder MAZDA6 boasts 160 horsepower. But race-ready, Bergenholtz's MAZDASPEED full tube-chassis front-wheel-drive drag car will harness more than 1000 horsepower and run the quarter mile in just over
7.5 seconds at nearly 200 mph.
"We expect this hot rod will have the same kind of impact on the drag racing world that the MAZDA6 is bound to have when it hits showrooms next month," said Steve Sanders, manager of MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development.
"Whether it's a quarter-mile drive to the grocery store or a quarter-mile sprint down a straightaway, Mazda takes pride in offering exhilarating driving experiences."
The Bergenholtz Racing MAZDA6 drag car will feature a heavily modified Garrett turbocharged, methanol-powered Mazda I-4 power plant, a Fortin five-speed sequential transmission and an advanced Motec engine management system. In addition, the hot rod offers full tube-chassis/suspension construction by Bullet Engineering, brakes by Strange Engineering, Weld Forged
Racing wheels, Goodyear drag racing slicks, Sparco safety equipment and graphics by Auto Evolution. Team Bergenholtz Racing and the new MAZDA6 pro drag car is the latest addition to Mazda's stellar motorsports heritage.
