U.K.:Mazda: Angels MX-5
Channel 4
31/7/2003
Mazda has converted 500 of its entry-level 1.6- and 1.8-litre MX-5 roadsters into 'Angels' special editions (meant as a tie-in with the new Charlie's Angels film, Full Throttle), which gain premium leather, alloys and some body kit for an extra £1000. The standard base roadster already has electric windows (though the fabric roof must be retracted manually), a CD player, ABS anti-lock brakes and two airbags. The extra kit one receives when buying an Angels car amounts to Medici black leather seats with red stitching, a rear spoiler, a wind blocker, 'chrome-effect' centre panel, 'style bars', unique badging, and 15-inch alloy wheels. Normally, a leather interior and alloys would cost £1143, so you're really only getting about £250-worth of kit for free. The limited editions come in either solid Eternal Red or Sunlight Silver metallic paint. Mazda insists that the many MX-5 special editions it has released over the years 'have proved popular, and in some cases, added to the car's residual value'. 4car warns that this is not always the case, however, special editions making little or no difference to the car's residual value.
