U.S.A.:Pricing for Mazda 3

Mazda announced prices for its 2004 3 lineup, which reaches U.S. dealerships in December. The base four-door 3i—powered by Mazda’s 2.0-liter, 148-hp 135-lb-ft inline four—starts at $14,200, including destination. The 2.3-liter, 160-hp 150-lb-ft 3s sedan checks in at $16,925. The top-of-the-line five-door hatchback (available in 2.3-liter s-trim only) stickers for $17,415. All come standard with a five-speed manual transmission. At the upper end, a loaded 3s hatchback with four-speed automatic transmission lists for $23,115.
Mazda3 uses Ford’s new C1 compact car platform, which also underpins the Volvo S40 (see page 12) due here next year and the not-for-U.S.-sale Ford C-Max MPV. Mazda expects to sell 70,000 to 75,000 of its Protegé / Protegé5 replacement in North America per year.
