this is on a Mercury Meta One concept (based on the Ford Freestyle) I think it would be great to see on a Territory option list. No fuel economy recorded anywhere, but my speculation is 5-8L / 100km with great performance and fantastic towing ability - with good economy while pulling also.

In Wheels March 2005 John Carey makes a case that going for a diesel engine in Australia isn't either financially or environmentally an attractive option. You need to have other reasons for going diesel - and those are valid reasons. You just shouldn't expect to save either money or the environment. The diesel-electric motor sounds positive for the environment but I would think a lot of buyers think about their hip pocket first: in Australia the savings offered by such an engine to its buyers would be a long time coming.

BTW apart from the article on the turbo Territory, the editorial and letters pages in March Wheels make interesting reading. In terms of selling itself, Territory has a lot in common with what the Leyland P76 confronted in its era - from outside appearances many don't understand what the difference is until they're coaxed into the driver's seat and onto the road where it suddenly becomes blindingly obvious. (And some will never understand because they they don't appreciate what a good-driving car is.) Thankfully the Wheels editors seem to be doing a good job as a blunter extension of Ford's Page Ranking department! Makes me think that a new vehicle type class is needed for the Territory to separate it from the 4WDs. "SUV" doesn't go far enough in convincing people that it is not a truck. Whenever I talk to anybody about ours I say its not a 4WD, its a car!

Fortunately I guess the best advertisement for the Territory is those huge sales figures - hard to ignore.
