Re: Brake problem?

The service department had a look at my Terri today, the Assistant Service manager phoned me and said that the PCM was replaced and that the brake problem was fixed.
When I picked it up, a service guy drove it round the front to me, I asked again was it all fixed? He told me that he "thinks so", I asked what they did and he said that the PCM was upgraded.

I did not have time to query anyone else, so I left with a thank you.

So far all is well.

Hi Territory - ignoring the Dealer stuff for a sec and getting back on-topic.... My brakes have a squeel and seem really underpowered sometimes when cold and more often when damp from a night's rain. I'll obviously get my dealer to look at it on it's first service.

My thought is that maybe there's a brake piston or pad movement issue. I have obviously noted that there had been a range of braking issues on the Falcon's, many of which have fixes available. Given that the Terri's brakes are very similar then surely the problems are also similar.

The one thing that concerns me about this thread Territory is that if the fault reported above is true then that's a recall situation - surely you should be endeavouring to get at that vehicle to see what the cause is - either a one-off fault or a design issue. If the brakes fail in a 2T vehicle then the mess will be shocking - both on the road and in the press, particularly once the press note that this got a prior mention in a web site clearly visible to Ford.

Re: Brake problem?

I can only comment on my own experience ... and I think the T's brakes are excellent .... noiseless (unlike a BA), good feel through the pedal and have never approached a fade point (onroad or offroad).

Brake performance + Stability Control + Traction Control + HDC = a happy camper!

I'm sorry a couple of you have an issue ... hope it can be fixed up for you.

The brakes on my Terri are also excellent.

Except for the mentioned two times that it felt like the rear brakes were doing all the work and none from the front, the second time was worse than the first. And this was flat highway driving, no prior braking involved.

Like Paulv, I am concerned. As we all know, braking is the number one safety device on a car.

I hope that it was a PCM problem.
The fault codes are sort of pointing that way, last time they kept the Terri for a few days checking everything because recorded faults were incorrect, so they cleared the codes. Today the same faults showed up.

I have thought about it a lot, and I hope it is fixed, but if it happens again I'll try releasing the pedal & reapplying pressure. When it happened before I only tried applying more pressure, which did not work

Re: Brake problem?

My Territory's brakes also work well, today I was travelling down winding gravel tracks with constant on-off brakes and no fade. But then I drove for 45 minutes on the freeway and felt some loss of power - like something was blocking the brake pedal - on the first use of the brakes. Released and re-applied the brakes without issue, but having read the above it seems like something to watch out for.

Re: Brake problem?

Since the PCM upgrade, I have done about 2000km and have not had any brake problems.

Looks like it is all fixed.

Could you have had a bit of gravel in a caliper? First touch cleared it out?

Re: Brake problem?

All

My Terri brake problems:

1. Traction Control light flashes when lightly braking (i.e. the brake lights are just on), at 50 plus kph on sweeping up hill or down hill bends.

Answer from Ford - The traction control and brack system calibration is a touch sensitive in certain situations. Ford is reviewing the settings but as you can imagine, testing prior to recalibration is a major undertaken.

2. Slight squeak when reversing. Appears to be the hand brake. Doesn't do it when going forward. Question for the next servcie.

3. When at the lights the brake pedal feels to be drifting ever so slightly to the floor. Another item to check at the next service.

Can someone please advise me what a PCM is?

Cheers

PCM = Power Control Module https://www.fleet.ford.com/glossary/default.asp

My dealers service manager told me that they updated the PCM, I don't know if that is true or if it is the full story but after the second go at it the brakes have been 100% efficient.

Mention it to your dealer.

One of the locals on this forum, Territory, reckons he works for Ford, send him a PM and ask if he has heard anything about brake problems.
Then again it is not the sort of talk Ford would want doing the rounds, so it might be hush, hush

Re: Brake problem?

No need to be secretive. I am not aware of a brake issue. PeterM is your vehicle a RWD or an AWD? I am assuming AWD and the light is VDC intervention. Are the bends you are refering to cambered the wrong way and/or covered with gravel or slick? If not then you should get it checked. Likewise the pedal should have no drift. Get both checked.
Between now and the next service, try and get the details of the exact situation that causes it so the service team can replicate it. If they can replicate it then they'll have a much better chance of sorting it out faster.
