No its a different noise altogether, and only occurs after driving a few meters, why would this noise only start happening after about 700 km, if it was the abs initialising wouldnt it have done it from day dot?

If it wasn't there from day one and/or it worries you, I'd recommend you get it checked out.

Ok, you start the car, you reverse out (although you don't have to reverse for the "noise" to occur), you select drive and accelerate away - once you're above 5 kmh (I think this is the speed at which it kicks in) you get the "noise" - in my vehicle it sounds like a cross between a clunk and an air-con flap closing, it is fairly short and sharp. It does not occur until forward motion is achieved, and then only at low speed, I would estimate you would travel no further than 10 - 20 metres before it ocurrs, and only once per vehicle start.

Having found out this is all quite normal, and designed in, and the reason for it, I now expect to hear it when taking off, and would worry if I didn't.

This topic has been covered in another thread, go here - Can someone put my mind at ease. Please! - to see the posts, including the post by "Territory" - our resident Terri expert, confirming that the noise is the ABS self test.

Re: Does anyone have this problem

Thanks guys, i will have to get it checked at the 3000 just for piece of mind. Everything else with the car is just fantastic, however i wouldnt dismiss trading her in just to get the 6 speed tranny when it comes out.

Re: Does anyone have this problem

FYI - I have the same noticable noise in a Dec 04 AWD Ghia, so from the thread so far, I am assuming it is somewhat normal, although it should probably be mentioned in the owners manual, so as to alay fears from new owners.
