Re: dvd player

There are a couple of threads on this subject. Some have bought portable DVD players and fed the sound into the aux jack of the dash head unit while others have installed head rest mounted or roof mounted units or screens by aftermarket specialists.

There used to be a heap of info on this on Fordmods.com - but that site crashed last week and all old posts are gone.

I have the REX3 but as I understand the options are as follows:

New head unit cannot be easily installed in centre console as Ford head unit is now integrated with other features and cannot be removed. Some people put an additional head unit where the tissues are and run screens in the headrests or where the REX3 goes.

Other people put the new head unit in the glovebox somehow - I've seen this more on falcons than on Territory's but the principle is the same...

Other DVD players are like the REX3 with integrated player and screen. These are installed in the same place as the REX3 and can have the sound fed through to the AUX input on the ford head unit.

I think you need to decide how many screens you want (if one then roof mount is ok - if more than one then go for head rest units. Then you need to decide how big you want the screen to be - REX3 is about 7" but you can get up to 10". From my experience 7" is heaps.

If you are going aftermarket check if the player is region free - i.e can play overseas sourced disks. - this is a big plus.

Don't discount the portable players too quickly. They can still be played via the cars speakers through the AUX input and they have as good a player quality regarding skipping etc as the fixed units. I bought a cheap portable player for the old car before I got the Territory and it can be used on holidays not only in the car but also in the destination - in our case usually a Sunshine Coast unit - so we can watch kids shows anytime - great babysitter.

I went for REX3 as since I was leasing the car - it made bugger all difference to the payments - but in hindsight I think there are better options - both for value and performance.

If I was paying $3000+ (same as REX3) I'd go for 2 x headrest mounted screens with separate DVD headunit.

If I was paying $1500-$3000 - Id go for a good roof mount system with 9-10" screen (check visibility of rear view mirror with screen down though - REX3 screen is not in the way at all but is only 7").

Less than $1500 - Id go for portable unit with one or two screens and play it through the AUX input.

Good luck.

Let me know if you want photos of the REX 3...

I second the praise and thanks to your thoughts Lordricy have decided I also will buy a portable unit which (I pray) can be used during our flights between Melb - Gold Coast and the hire car. Also the hotel room. Plus, knowing I will trade in our wagon within a year find this a better option then fitting a top end system only to leave it in the car or leave holes in the roof come trade-in time.
