Cool, thank you very much for the info.

Worth doing on an old almost 30-year-old engine you think?

And is it expensive?

BTW I will also be interested in seeing how this oil analysis goes on your Territory.

No problems.

It depends what oil you are using. If it is synthetic and you want to get the max life out of the oil, it is worth having it analysed.

Cost me $30.00

Re: Oil change

I forgot to update this thread, but better late than never.

My third oil analysis was at 10132 kms and everything is looking good, next one is due at 15000kms, about 2000km to go. I'm thinking about changing to the FUCHS GT1 at the next oil change, I've used it before in another vehicle and was very happy with it, but with the Terri's new engine, I thought I'd play it safe and use a 5W30.

Sample Date....28/03/05.......19/12/04.......21/11/04
Vehicle Kms.....10132.............4826............3739
Oil Kms...........5306...............4826............3739
Oil Brand..FUCHS Supersyn....Motorcraft....Motorcraft
Oil Grade.........5w30..............10w30.........10w30
Metals (ppm) -
Aluminium (Al)..... 3...................7................6
Copper (Cu).........7..................21..............20
Chromium (Cr)......1...................1................1
Iron (Fe).............11.................31..............29
Lead (Pb)............13.................24..............21
Tin (Sn)...............3...................9...............8
Nickel (Ni) ...........1..................<1...............1
Contaminants / Additives (ppm)
Silicon (Si) ..........22.................92...............90
Boron (B).............35................<5..............<5
Sodium (Na).........5...................11..............10
Potassium (K).......4...................1................2
Phosphorus (P).....923..............867..............882
Molybdenum (Mo)..411..............1.................1
Magnesium (Mg)...1002.............866..............882
Calcium (Ca)........1487............1220............1278

PQ Index...............35..............37.............. .41
Glycol (Abs).........<0.1............<0.1.............<0.1
Petrol(%by Distil)...1.3..............1.4..............***

Metals can only come from the engine internals. Contaminants/Additives can come from coolant, water, dust, oil additives. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/gasol...port_expl.html
The three samples:
The first was at 3739km, the diagnosis was a pass and to keep monitoring the oil.
The second was at 4826km, just before I changed the oil. The analysis report came back with a warning of high Tin levels;
"Tin wear rate slightly elevated (possible bearing/thrust washer wear). All other wear rates normal. Silicon level is most likely due to seal and gasket material reaction with the lubricant. Please check recorded viscosity against requirements.
Action: As oil and filter(s) already changed, Resample 5000 kms to further monitor tin level."

The third sample was at 10132km, the diagnosis showed all wear rates had dropped;
"All wear rates normal. Abrasive and other contaminant levels acceptable. Please check recorded viscosity against requirements.
Action: Resample next recommended service interval to further monitor".

Some reading if your interested;

The engine is on the driver side, under the vehicle is the engine sump, the plug is usually on the side of the sump (not exactly sure).

You can pick up after market repair manuals quite cheap, like this one; http://www.pitstop.net.au/pitstop/pr...3PUM&PLU=15716
