Premium Fuel?

I've always liked Premium and used it in my previuos car, a intercooled Turbo.

On the Turbo'd vehicle I could always feel the difference when using Premium, I got better economy & more of a power surge. BP & Shell were the best stuff.

On the Terri I can't seem to feel any difference between the standard & Premium stuff, fuel consumption doen't change either.

Has anyone noticed any difference?

I'm thinking of just sticking to the Standard fuel.

Re: Premium Fuel?

Hi Johny,
Not sure yet either, but I always run premium anyway. Much cleaner & consistent fuel.

Re: Premium Fuel?

I have used both and to be honest it doesn't make a rats of difference to either economy or performance. Now I try to alternate tanks just to keep the fuel system clean....

Yeah, if I moght do the same.

With my other car the difference was great enough to use Premium all the time.

BP Ultimate has a unique formulation that improves vehicle performance, cleans your engine and delivers less pollution than ordinary fuels.

BP Ultimate has a research octane number (RON) of 98, which is higher than standard unleaded petrol which has a research octane number (RON) of 91. This difference in octane can, on average, provide increased power benefits in certain vehicles.

BP Ultimate is more than just increased power. The benefits of BP Ultimate also include enhanced cleaning and reduced engine friction.

The performance benefits depend on the individual vehicle, but our aim has been to give material performance benefits to all vehicles that upgrade from any ordinary unleaded to BP Ultimate, in the areas of improved acceleration and responsiveness, increased power and reduced fuel consumption. *For information on older cars please refer below.

Unlike previous generations of "premium" fuels, these benefits are due to much more than just increased octane number.

Whilst some benefits are noticeable on many car types quite quickly, full benefits will be achieved with continuous use of BP Ultimate.

Re: Premium Fuel?

That's cos it's not tuned to run on high octane fuel. Regular unleaded isnt "dirty" its just a lower octane content - performance engines are generally tuned for high octane, regular engines such as the Ford six, in my oppinion should run best on regular fuel.. few engines adjust to optimise which ever you put in it

Re: Premium Fuel?

Todays engine management systems are designed to optimise the spark advance to suit all conditions for optimum economy & power, this is helped with sensors including a Knock Sensor to detect piston knock.

Quote:
A wide band knock control strategy has been developed for the Barra 182 engine to prevent the potentially harmful effects of detonation as well as to cope with variable fuel quality.

It is activated across the entire rev range.

Advantages for customers are enhanced if they run on Premium Unleaded fuel. Increased spark advance means more power and greater consumption benefits without the risk of detonation.

Re: Premium Fuel?

Check out these video's of Premium Fuel testing http://www.bp.com.au/ultimate/pages/video.asp

The video 'demonstration of the acceleration', is it me or is the car with standard unleaded out-accelerating the Premium fuel car on take off?

And the video showing fuel economy is a test between two identical vehicles traveling at 100kp/h until they run out of fuel, do they look like they are traveling slower than 100kp/h

Re: Premium Fuel?

After a long distance drive I have noticed a difference between the two fuel types;
above about 80km/h the engine feels more responsive & pulls better, also seems to rev quicker.
This was with the BP Ultima.

I mainly noticed when overtaking, 90km/h & up, the Terri did not quite feel the same with the standard ULP.
