I regularly get Sat Nav in my hire vehicles when I visit the big cities and love it albeit with some of the limitations others have referred to. However, $3600 is a lot for an inbuilt unit which you sell with the vehicle when you can get a portable Navman for $1200 or thereabouts.

BTW - NineMSN in Australia has just launched a free on-line map and direction service. Check it out at http://maps.ninemsn.com.au

You could always print out the directions before your trip.
