I don't see how Ford are going to fill the gap for "Wagon Buyers" if the base Territory is going to be so expensive. Read, "RWD base model in the high $30,000 bracket". Personally, I don't think it's such a good move and looks more like a scheme to sell more Territorys.
Should be a great product all the same.
Not sure where you get "so expensive" from??? The cheapest BA wagon you can get is $36,445, and plain and simple logic would suggest that the Territory, being more complex, would cost more to build - and therefore cost more to purchase?
High $30k bracket seems to be right on the money to me...

My mistake, I didn't realise the wagons were that expensive. Are the Territorys planned to come in under $37k-38k? Regardless, if it is going to be a bit more expensive than a wagon, it still is money. Consumers are concerned about a few hundred/thousand $$$. $1k-2k is a lot of money in that price bracket.

Other than Fleet Sales, Ford sell very few wagons and private wagon sales are almost negligable (Telstra buy more wagons as a fleet than the total number of private wagon buyers...much more!!). You could almost count private wagon buyers on one hand and as for Fleets.....I doubt that they will be that much out of pocket with the rebates they are eligable for.
The downside (in terms of volume) for Ford will be absolutely minimal if the wagon ceases to exist as a separate vehicle. Besides regardless of current speculation, by the time it's launched a RWD territory will be priced to go head to head with a Commodore Wagon (its main competitor), it will just be a much better car!!
Other benefits of having no wagon...
Reduced engineering for future models
Reduction in complexity on the production line (better quality??)
No more vehicles with a rear bumber 2" higher than the rest of the bodywork!!
There are plenty more but that will do for now
Hate to admit it, but the Territory will probably perform much better as a package with a Turbo 6 rather than a V8, especially if the V8 is the SOHC 220 unit.
Being a heavy vehicle as it is, a V8 is not going to help this factor and the weight may dull off what performance gains you would get.
That's because it is and always has been a poorly finished, poorly built piece of rubbish.
It actually isn't that bad off road and will easily keep up with a Landcruiser in 99.99% of off road circumstances. And the most recent model I actually think looks okay, very Amercian but still okay.
But it's finish (panel gabs, platics quality, etc) is so far behind that of its competitors its just not funny.
Umm Richo
I beg to differ
Havent spent some time in various 4wd in QLD, I do beleive the Explorer (2003) is a very different animal compared to the pre 03 models
Even the 4wd mags where giving it a huge thumbs up over several other 4wd vehicle late last year
Its not designed as a sports car, but I tell you what, the thrashing I give mine has me impressed!
It can't be that hard to fit the 220 V8 in the RWD Territory. There's no transfer case to get in the way. All they would need to do is to get it to fit in the engine bay, and with most bits in the bay Falcon related it shouldn't be that difficult. Maybe the front mounted steering would get in the way.
