Not sure if anyone else has noticed, but does your Territory steering wheel have an irrugular shudder? When cruising sometimes, you can have a slight shudder in the steering. Sometimes, not at all. Other times after a bump or a corner a slight shudder, then another bump smooth again.
Being from northern Victoria, and travelling on dirt roads, it was common in my old EFII Fairmont wagon, but I don't get it in my wifes AU Fairmont.
A local shop keeper has a Territory GHIA and he brought my attention to it first, and asked me to take his vehicle for a spin. I noticed mine that night.
If it was a wheel balance, wouldn't you expect it all the time?
But there is a shudder that feels like the transmission torque converter lock-up clutch. When I first got the Terri the shudder was very prominent, after 1500km I hardly felt it, now that I have done over 3000km I cannot remember the last time I felt the shudder.
The other Territory in Town has done almost 17,000km's and the dealer can't find a wheel prodlem. Would the torque converter be still wearing in with this many k's on the clock?

I agree; it's not a steering wheel shudder (or at least it is, but it's caused by something more sisnister). johnnydep replied to my thread re a suspected gearbox issue. My brand new Territory has been taken back to the dealer and they are giving me a new vehicle. Unfortunately the loan car I have in the meantime has the same problem; when coasting at 1500 revs and 50kmh, try to very slightly accelerate and you will probably find the shudder you are talking about. No answers yet, but Ford don't seem to like the fact that we've found this problem...........so much so that they are now trying to force us to take a refund and not a new car as they believe the problem is common to all Territories. Worrying!

My Territory is not without its problems but I don't have this one. Are the Territory's your talking about RWD or AWD. My AWD doesn't seem to have any shudders (thankfully). So for Ford to say they all do it seems wrong. Tell them you want it fixed or you want one that doesn't have this added feature...

My experience is like johnnydep's - was quite noticeable early on but after 4000 kms I hardly ever notice the shudder - getting better all the time. Ford trying to force a refund over the issue? You're not serious are you Kiwi?

Absolutely serious. Very strange not to have an ounce of confidence in a product. After further research (incl this website) it appears it could well be the lock up clutch. Sounds like poor design to try and improve fuel consumption when coasting.

Coasting?
Coasting ... like going down a hill and the transmission shifts down a gear (out of fourth back to third and therefore, disengaging the torque converter)?
If so ... then that's the Grade Logic Control which some manufacturers (incl. BMW on the X5) have in their transmissions as a safety feature .. to prevent/reduce overspeeding even when on cruise control.
Takes a little while to get used to (my previous BA Falcon with the same box does not have this feature) .... and I'm not sure if I really like it myself ... but when the kick down happens ... it is definitely not a smooth change ... and is easily the clunkiest shift of all the shifts the auto trans makes ....
I still notice the minor shudder from time to time which happens around 1500 revs under gentle acceleration or deceleration. Annoyance factor only but as my Terri was at the Service Centre yesterday to get a replacement instrument cluster glass (came with a scratch) I mentioned it to them and even pretended to be knowledgable and referred to the lock up clutch. On picking it up I was told they had re-programmed the computer and believed they had fixed it. No sign of the shudder since so maybe it is an easy fix.
