I think they will have to include a V8 option and a Diesel engine option, I don't think fords I6 capacity is strong enough at the moment, isn't i6 head or block production pretty much at max now anyway?
I think they will be interested on a V8 option, fords not that stupid to make the same mistake... twice..

RWD V8 then! DOHC 5.4 + TR3650!!! Plus drop the body and teh roofline a little. Round the body a little, give it a boot, bonnet bulge.... NOW she's sweet.... Whoops, we've just made a BA...
Why spend the money on the Territory? We've already got Exploders, Expeditions, Excursions, F-trucks... All proven products that sell good overseas.

Why? Because there is a market for this type of vehicle...simple as that really. The vehicles you have listed aren't in the same category as this one will be in anyway.

How is an Explorer different from a Territory? Or maybe we'll take the Mazda Tribute, that one's got the soul of a sports car.

You write up a list of whats similar and I'll go write a list on what's different and we'll see who's is longest.
While I think a V8 woudl be a sweet, and make us all feel warm and cuddly to know its there, i wonder how many v8 Territory would actually sell?
How many of us here can honestly say that they are seriously considering territory, but not if its I6 (turbo option please). HEy this thing is going to be big, heavy with a higher Centre of gravity then a falcon, its NOT going to be an XR beater, regardless how well done it is.
They need a cost concious "stripper version" (taxi fleet?) for cash strapped families, and they need a "Fairmont ghia" version, and one in between. Leave the HiPo version to FPV.
BTW I think the whole point of territory is that it is NOTHING like EXplorer or any of these light 4wd, as its baased on a road car, and drives like one, NOT a truck, bus or delivery van.
As I said Im up for one, but the Barra engine and that tiptroinc 4 speed is soo sweet it will do me fine (perhaps turbo). Its not exactly one of them strained peaky japanese 4 or tiny v6 like the others have.
Rastus you are spot on - and I agree with you totally if Ford want to make this a volume seller and a viable and competitive alternative accross various markets.
I think there is an example in the 80's of what happens to a company that drops a v8 option................. - maybe Ford could learn from them?

Isn't Explorer still body-on-frame construction with the weight and dynamics typical of this construction. Plus it's too big and ugly and American.

Oh NO your starting to believe the advertising spiel - stop it.
I really like the Tribute/Escape twins but just couldn't give up my torquey I6 RWD Falcon to get into a revvy V6 that is FWD biased. They are also a touch too small and my kids want 3rd row seating so they don't have to sit next to each other - little darlings (the Falcons just wide enough to keep them far enough apart).
Now the kids are school age I want the family to get back into the camping/touring/outdoorsy thing but still need a practical day-to-day commuter and I enjoy my driving. A sporty Falcon fits part of that description but low-profile rubber and a lowered stance isn't too good for the outdoorsy bit.
I'll have a Territory with T6 power thanks.
Though I agree that the lack of a V8 option devalues the model significantly (XF-EA all over again).

thats a good point...so why is it so hard to drop a V8 in it again?
I would like to hear the official reason for this...and saying that it will be coming with series two doesn't help at all. First impressions count just like anything else.
Is it true to say that every other 4x4 in its class offers a V8 option excpet for the pajero maybe?? Even that might have it.
