i loved driving the Territory, but i dont think it's a Landcruiser/Discovery replacement for people who want better handling.... I think it's the Falcon/Commodore replacement for people who want a funkier car, with a little more capability and practicality, and something more enjoyable to drive. People here might not agree that the Territory drives better than a standard Falcon, but that's what i found. I at least found it more enjoyable.
I'm thinking a lifestyle version, simialer to baja...
Slightly shorter wheelbase, 2 door. Weld the rear doors and from the window line up move the c pillar forward so that there's only a bit of the rear window still left (or possibly enough for a third door ala courier). chop off the roof from the c pillar back and put a ute-like tailgate on it...
Wait 'n see but this would have to be the direction to head. On the diesel thou I read that the quality of our diesel fuel isn't good enoungh for these engines that are available
Off Raptors Original post, but, a Diesel, would be the natural progression for the car(looking at other thread maybe it is too good to be called a car)
They dont need to do much to the car as it is now, the Territory Mk II will be a small fix on some minor problems that have arisen, and from customer feedback and hopefully drop a diesel into the mix. Once the Diesel is in, its flow on effect for others in the range. (Falcon, They may consider a Focus Tdi, etc)
I have absolutely no doubt in my mind whatsoever that the Territory MkII will have a diesel engine of some sort as well as a Turbo variant (perhaps a tweaked XR6T engine at 250Kw).
If the diesel engine is relatively successful, I also have zero doubt that it will be made available in 2006/7 for the new Falcon. (perhaps as incentive for Taxi owners, who will also be catered for when the Taxi pack is reintroduced as a factory option, instead of an 'aftermarket' mod it is at the moment).
Ford have enough engines in their empire. What would be so hard to drop the Land Rover diesel engine into Territory? Ford have enough engineers to do it. Holden have dunnydores running around with diesel engines. Holden might upstage Ford and Ford will again have to play catchup!!
Huh? .... what do you think Territory was?
Do you reckon Holden might be severely pissed off that they completely missed the boat with this style of crossover SUV? They will be tearing their hair out right now trying to think of a way to combat the T. Did you notice they even tried to sabotage the T winning the Wheels COTY by doing the media release if the V6 Adventra on the same day? Pathetic really .... but understandable. When you have a weak hand you still try and win a point ....
It'll take 'em years to catch up .... no imported SUV they get to try and match Territory will work (price, design, engineering) .... they need to do their own version off a Commodore ... and they won't do that.
I agree with you that Ford has often been second for quite a few things but let's not be too critical of Ford Oz .... they spent all their money on the T and its paid off and will do so for a few years yet ....
where to for the Monaro now? where to for the Adventra?
Having said that .... hey Mr Gorman .... when's AWD going into Falcon and the Ute? A AWD/4WD Falcon Ute in single, space and crew cabs .... would kick butt .... then let's get going on a high tech diesel OK?

I would consider thinking about that...... That was all the Euro's excuses prior to the last 12-18 months. But you look at things now.
Audi have loads of Diesel's so do Volks, BMW in X5.. Landrover, Rangies...
Citroen, Pug's.
They are all bringing them now, so obviously our quality of fuel has increased or they have built their engines with more tolerance to low quality fuel ( prior is probably correct there)
A good diesel be ideal. It would remove one of the Territory's two weaknesses - fuel economy. (the only other weakness being weight) I'm wondering if the Jag TDi V6 would be added to all three Territory models or might the base TX miss out? Also if Ford decide to make a more serious off road Territory, I think they should make it diesel only. Give all Territory's a 5sp Auto standard and a 6sp Manual option with the Diesel's and the RX6 Turbo (my name for an XR Territory) Increase the Ghia's power to about 200kw and 400Nm and you would have a big improvement on an already stand out car.

Personally I would much rather see a 6speed auto before anything else. This would improve both pickup (due to closer ratios) and fuel economy. Given the option of a 4/5 speed auto diesel with or without turbo, or the current motor with a 6speed auto I would choose the latter every time. In my opinion making into a "serious off road teritory" would sereously undermine the car as it would loose a lot of it's on road appeal which the thing that sold it for me.
