I know they're rated to 2300kg (same as the Falcon)...but what I really want to know is, how does the Territory suspension compare to to the Falcon. Is it different?
I'm going to need to tow a horse float, and am trying to work out if the Territory (even though rated the same) is more inclined towards towing?
Can anyone help?
Territory suspension design (at the rear) is a similar Control-Blade™ type setup as in the Falcon sedan. Though it has higher ride height and a wider track.
The wagons and utes have leaf rear spring and a live axle.
The only advantage that the Territory may have over the Falcons is a shorter rear overhang.
Arguably a leaf spring axle is better for towing since there is less scope for lateral movement etc, but the control blade configuration is pretty good since it has three lateral links (contrast to a VT Commodore's none, just semi-trailing arms).
Also the extra weight of the Territory would help the stability when towing.
I wonder whether there are any demo cars fitted with tow bars for addressing this very issue? It would be a major factor for a lot of potential buyers who currently have large 4x4s for towing.
Maximum carrying capacity of 2300kg#
Rigorously tested to meet stringent Ford engineering standards and Australian Design Rules
Required components (to be ordered separately):
Towbar – durable and reliable to make towing a breeze
Towball – triple chrome plated to prevent corrosion Load Levelling Kit – distributes Towbar load to improve handling and braking
Trailer Wiring Kit – allows the use of lights on the trailer
Auxiliary Transmission Cooler Kit
RRP Fitted*: $1670.00
A trans cooler is also fitted, but the AWD also get it as standard.
If you get a RWD and a tow bar later, make sure you get a decent trans cooler fitted.
This may be of help...
We previously owned a 1994 Commodore Acclaim, so....
Towing the same Jayco 16ft Poptop, 1450kg loaded, we recently did about 4,000km to Flinders Ranges etc over 4 weeks. Found that the Territory TS AWD did the job much better....more stable and generally more relaxing to drive, hardly affected by passing or overtaking Semis...Fuel consumption worked out at about 19l/100km.
While the ford optioned 2300kg tow pack is $1670, you can buy an identical, if not better high kg tow pack from Hayman reese, for about $359 +GST.
Dad just had that fitted to his Ghia. The dealership arranged that prior to delivery.
Looks good.. can remove the towbar, no more hitting my shins on it :)
But does it come with; Load Levelling Kit – distributes Towbar load to improve handling and braking
Trailer Wiring Kit – allows the use of lights on the trailer
Auxiliary Transmission Cooler Kit
A trans cooler is a must have part of the tow bar.
Thanks guys these comments are good. I also started looking into the Explorer...they are rated to 2.5 tonne with the same accessories as mentioned above...load leveler, etc. I love the look of them, as I can see many similarities to the Territory. They have the 5 speed auto, but I think they drink a bit more.
Just not sure which way to go regarding a vehicle that will have to tow.
The Explorer V8 doesnt use much more fuel than the Territory - it would probably make a better tow vehicle. Also I am hanging out for this Discovery 3 - should be in dealerships in Dec (rated at 3500kg)
