Re: whining territory

Time to try a new dealer.

Ford do have very few balancers but whether that fixes the problem remains to be seen.

Hope you have luck getting it fixed, this is the first major problem l have heard of with a territory. ford seem to have got it mostly right.

Good luck.

Re: whining territory

ring a few other dealers in your local area and ask if they have a balancer.
also brings the question too, if this is the problem then what else is the 'unbalancing' affecting in the long term?

If that particular dealer cant assist, go via Ford's Customer Assistance Centre and they will track & help resolve your issue.

Reading from the Wheels Special Edition .... the balancing of the tailshaft is an important job that is done at the factory after the car is basically finished build.

Sounds like your tailshaft has thrown the balancing weight Maurie .... what might be happening is that the tailshaft is developing a harmonic wobble (as it is out balance, like a wheel/tyre would do) which will be amplified the higher revs you run at (or highway plus speeds) ...

I'd actually be thinking about restricting the revs and speed you do for a while until it gets checked. I'd reckon its a reasonably easy fix when they get the balancer .... which has given you grief out of all proportion to the fix ....

A couple of years ago a friend of mine had an issue with an XR8 with a not dissimilar tailshaft issue and he got some help by calling the local Ford Office (not the Dealerships, the local Ford Company office) and getting hold of a technical guru there. Might be something you might want to try?

My AWD Ghia is very quiet at a 110km/h.
I have recently had roof bars installed, and this has given the Terri a noise at 115km/h but it is only just audible.

An out of balance tail shaft should show up as a vibration, not a noise.

The shafts are balanced on the vehicle at the factory check the shaft, you should se balance weights clipped on. Compare it to another Territory.

The way you describe it, the vehicle must sound like a 1950’s jeep. The Auto’s do not make that much noise even on their last legs (when planetary gear set has failed).
Could be the transfer case, I read a report about how BMW found & rectified a balance problem in the X5 transfer case (NV125, same model as Territory).
http://www.wcs-group.com/ecs526/Group2Final.ppt this is the document in Power Point. The problem only occurred at high speeds on the Autobahn.
Here is a NVH testing facility for the transfer case http://www.testrigs.com/transfer-case-testing.html
Fords spin on their set-up; http://www.ford.com.au/inside_ford/p...ile=foa317.htm

I have come across seized tail shaft universal joints & CV joints that make a hell of a lot of noise, but usually vibration accompanies it.
The Territory does not use universal joints.

Could it be the differential making the fire siren noise?

Has the mechanic pinpointed where the noise is coming from?
I mean did they specify a position e.g. rear centre, rear right, etc?

If they think it is the tail shaft, what is the problem? The vehicle is under warranty, give it to them & get a loan Terri while they fix it.

Let us know what happens.

Re: whining territory

Tell your dealer to send it out to a contractor to get balanced
