Why no side steps with Side Airbags?

Apparently when you have the side (curtain) airbags on a Territory, you are not allowed to fit the side steps. Anyone know why?

May be something to do with the step interferring with the airbag triggering. Seems logical but I'm guessing.

Re: Why no side steps with Side Airbags?

As the running boards are available on curtain airbag-equipped vehicles from Q3 onwards, I suspect that calibration of the module that deploys the airbags in the event of a side impact has not yet been done with the running boards fitted. Also, side impact crash tests with the corresponding configuration - running boards with curtain airbags, may not have been done yet, and would be needed to get a ANCAP rating for that configuration of vehicle.

Re: Why no side steps with Side Airbags?

I just fail to see how it could make any difference - its not as if the sensors would be affected by it because they would be covering the whole panel, not just down the bottom where the steps fit.

Re: Why no side steps with Side Airbags?

The side steps would change the crumple/crush characteristics, which may affect the triggering or deployment of the airbags. I don't think it would be a big difference, but not something you would want to make an assumption about. Fair enough to hold off until it has been validated, but given the length of the Territory development it is a bit surprising it was not ready at launch.

Re: Why no side steps with Side Airbags?

Well it seems the development has been done, because there's no way you can have them fitted, or at least, Ford wont do it. Apparently they are a real bugger of a thing to fit too.

I have ordered mine with the Ghia - and was told it will be fitted by dealer once FOMOCO have given them the details etc. Apparently there is a slight difference between non side airbag sidesteps to side airbag side steps so I was told. Also calibration etc.

babluf,

what we were told by the dealer yesterday was that they wre not currently available to be put onto a Territory that has side curtains, and that they wont be made available at any stage later on.

When your ordered yours, did they explain what was different about the side airbag system that allowed them to be put on?

The Territory website, in particular the Ghia configurator has a "note" on the Running Board option that says they are available for vehicles with side airbags from Q3, which depending on how you look at it, could mean now, or by end-September.
