Ok. The old man has a 2000 model Ford Explorer XLT. The problem is that the lock on the drivers door dosent want to stay up. It will not move up when you hit the central locking and therefore you can not get out from the inside and you cant get in from the outside.
He managed to get the lock up enough to attach a bolt to this, but this is not a good solution as this means that the car is unlocked all the time.
It also means that if you open the door when the car thinks that all doors are locked you set off the alarm.
Easy fix? Nope, the door lock actuator has gone bad. The panel needs to be removed to replace it and you don't have access to the screws and, or clips to remove it. Best left to a body shop or locksmith, unless you don't mind messing up the door panel to diy.
