Hi friends, I have an 02 Explorer 4.0L that has a problem starting. Heres the skinny... The vehicle will turn over without starting until I turn the ignition off and on and try to start it several times. What I have noticed is that after several trys I hear what sounds like a fuel pump run in the engine compartment. When I hear this I know the vehicle will start and it does. I understand the fuel pump is in the fuel tank. Is there someting else in the engine compartment that would make this happen?

The fuel pump should run for a few seconds every time the key is turned to the run position. If it doesn't always run, it's more than likely the pump. There can bea relay or other causes, but 95% of the time it's the pump.
