So after almost $1500 in repairs I am still experiencing a bad rattle coming from what seems the front left side of the engine. The timing chain tensioners have been replaced along with the belt tensioner, pulley and belt. Sound is definitely coming from the front of the engine. Noise is most noticeable at first start, but goes away when you have the RPM's up over 1500. No noise when driving. Only at idle and worse when the truck is in gear. Truck runs fine does not stumble or shake. The dealer is now telling me that it could be the balance shaft, but from what I have read there is no balance shaft on 2WD models. Truck has 182,000 miles on the clock. This is a 4.0l engine. I am stumped. Any help would be great.

I assume so. How would I know it is bad?

The truck had some major work done to it just prior to this noise starting. All fluids changed. Coolant, P/S fluid, brake fluid, trans fluid, rear diff fluid, A/C manifold line replaced and system recharged, rack and pinion replaced. I pulled the serpentine belt and all pullies spin freeley with no noise or binding.

Check for any lift / play or noisy bearing .

Ok I will pull out my stethoscope and check it out today.

May not be that but eliminates a possible cause of rattle / noise . Try your stethoscope on alternator also .
