I am going to change the power steering pump on my wife's '04 Mountaineer V8 this weekend, it is making a bad whirring noise. I went to the parts store and ordered the new one and asked what fluid I should use, I was planning on using the factory recommended Mercon V. The guy at the counter said that the Mercon V causes the seals to swell and said I should use regular power steering fluid. I try to follow Ford's recommendations so should I use the Mercon or switch it to regular fluid?

He's misinformed. Use the Mercon V. It doesn't swell the seals.
