Starting with 2006, Mercury changed the design of the second and third row seats in the Mountaineer and I assume the Explorer. The second row will fold down, then can be folded flat. My problem is when the second row is folded flat, it creats a about a 6" gap between the second and third row. I have an '05 Mountaineer which has a sliding deck mounted to the back of the third row seats to push over the gap between the folded down seats. I mainly use the back area for transporting my 2 boxers and feel that in the event I have to stop quickly one of the dogs might step into the gap and break a leg. Is there any commercial product that will close off this gap? I have seen cargo liners that fit from the rear hatch to the back of the second (upright) row of seats but I haven't been able to find anything that will cover the gap.
