1991 Explorer Front end not engaging in 4x4

Anyone have any dealing with the front end on their Explorer not engaging when shifted into 4x4 mode??? The light on the switch turns on, the dash light comes on, but the front end is not driving or pulling the vehicle at all. Also, I cannot get the 4x4 low mode to engage under any Circumstances...Any ideas on what to check or look at ???? Any info would be great.... Thanks....

Re: 1991 Explorer Front end not engaging in 4x4

My '94 had that issue when I bought it, but I knew beforehand that the auto-locking outer hubs are problematic on these vehicles. I bought two new outer hubs at a junkyard for 20 bucks each (if I recall) and the problem was fixed. As for the 4x4 low... I have no idea

Ours did the same thing. But ours wasn't in the hub itself. It was in the 4x4 motor on the tranny. It looks just a windshield wiper motor. It's held in with 3 bolts, and really easy to change out. We got ours at the junkyard and worked like a charm.

That's the most likely cause..... but the motor is actually on the transfer case, not the transmission.

Re: 1991 Explorer Front end not engaging in 4x4

i have a problem on my 1991 explorer. The 4x4 light wont come on at all and it wont engage either. I can hear the control box clicking where the windshield washer goes in from the rear . It was working fone and just all of a sudden it does not engage or light.. Im thinking either the transfer case motor or something else.. anyones help would be appreciated
