Ok it has 200,000 miles on it, but it still has shifted perfectly the whole 6 months ive owned it. this past friday, on the way home from work, i turned on a street and heard what sounded like a chain rattle, or a part hit the ground. but it drove fine the rest the way home. i drove 3 other times locally and it drove fine. Today on the way to work, all of a sudden when i turned onto a street, the3 truck wouldnt go anymore. i pulled off the rode. it shifts into ALL gears like it should but wont move in either direction. I shifted into a gear and almost floored it, and it would ease up like it wanted to move but wouldnt. its 4wd, but even shifting back and forth every which way possible, it wont move...also, i dont know if this matters, but 2 weeks ago the "4wd" and "4wd low" lights on the dash started to flash, and flash still to this day, but only periodically while driving. ive never had any tranny problems with this truck, the fluid shows its not low. im stumped on what would cause this, plz help, and thanks in advance :)

I hate to say it, but get ready to break out the checkbook. My 04 did the same thing, now it has a different tranny in it. Hopefully its not that bad, but thats exactly what mine would do. Good chance a servo in the tranny went. Good luck

Your Transmission sounds just like what happened to mine the first time I had to have it rebuilt because the shift solenoids went bad in it and the had to put a new shift kit in it that Ford came out with at the same time.
I also have a 96 Explorer XLT that the automatic transmission has been rebuilt twice on it. This past Thursday when I got in it it would not back up when in Reverse, after sitting in Reverse for about 2 minutes it would engage but idles roughly and the O/D Light started blinking. I then put it in drive to go around the block to see how it acted but it will not shift out of low range as it should on acceleration. The RPM's go higher but still no change and it has very little power when trying to back up an incline. The alternator was bad so I replaced it on Friday as well as the battery. Then today I cleaned the IAC on it because of the loud whine coming from the air filter tube which took care of the whine. Still cannot figure out why the transmission is acting up. Does anyone have any suggestions? The last rebuild of the Transmission was 20 months ago and that person has retired so the shop is closed down.

Unfortunatly the auto tranny is a very common problem on those (that's why all of mine have been 5spds) yet I've known some that have gone 300,000 miles with never having a problem, but others have gone as low as 100,000 (or less).

Another unfortunate thing is that the only tranny that will fit that motor is the same one. Even if you get your hands on a used one, I would strongly recomend having it rebuilt. So you may as well rebuild the one you've got unless you can track down a referb with a warranty.

I have had the transmission rebuilt completely. The mechanic found that what had been done in the earlier rebuilds was not up to par, the valve body had been replaced with one from a newer model that caused most of the problem. Nothing had been adjusted properly and no updates had been applied as required. The Reverse Drum was badly worn is why it would not go in reverse. The wiring harness was frayed when it was put in at the factory the way it looked. So everyone with an Explorer needs to be aware that the bands are not properly adjusted is what is making them wear out so quickly. Most mechanics are just after the money to get you out the door and waiting on the next sucker to drop by so they can do a half rebuild to keep you coming back. I finally found a mechanic that does the job right the first time and keeps his reputation in good order by doing excellent work. It may take an A1 mechanic longer to fix the problem but at least it is correctly done!!
