confused 1999 Ford Explorer - No Reverse??? PLZ help

The other day i was trying to reverse and the reverse suddenly stopped working . The vehicle has 129,000 miles on it and has been properly maintained. The drive works PERFECT, but no reverse. It almost feels as though the reverse is in neutral or something. The RPM`s go up, but the tires don`t move. The first thing i did is fluid change, then cable adjustment, and finally range sensor for transmission. None of the above corrective actions worked. The only bit of information I have is when it went out I gassed it a little hard then almost felt as if I hit something. So I am thinking valve body, solenoid, or possible spring or something. I dont`t think transmission needs to be replaced because it runs too good in drive. As a matter of fact i did a cross country drive from el paso,TX to Aiken, SC a week ago(1700 miles). If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate.

My mother-n-laws Explorer did the exact same thing yesterday. Did you find a solution?

Re: 1999 Ford Explorer - No Reverse??? PLZ help

It sounds like the reverse band. When you mentioned that it felt like you hit something and then went free, that was the last movement of the band. I'm guessing here as I haven't torn down your transmission but, the servo broke or hung up, or the band came loose from the hold side and the servo side. My truck currently has a delayed reverse shift sometimes which I think is the pressure servo based on reading and if I don't fix it soon, the same will happen to mine. The truck starts to move in reverse, I give it some gas and then the servo clamps the band fully tight. This is putting much more stress on the mechanism that performs the clamping (servo, linkage and band) I won't be able to get to mine for another 2 - 4 weeks so I'll post here what I find if it lasts that long.

Re: 1999 Ford Explorer - No Reverse??? PLZ help

this has happened to me twice now. Back in Feb of 2008 my Explorer was
in the shop getting an emissions test. My Ford is a 1992 by the way. The shop ran the engine in park up to 2800 rpm for a minute or so. Then did the idle test. When finished they tried to back out of the shop and no reverse!
The transmission felt as though it was stuck in forward regardless of being in the "park", "neutral" or "forward" settings!! Shop said tranny overheated and the plates were welded together. They said a complete overhaul was necessary.
Well it's that time of year to get emissions and inspections done. This time with a completely new trans. Went to a different shop and the SAME THING happened! NO REVERSE! Even with the new transmission! Feels like it is stuck in Drive. Even in "park" setting the tranny is engaged while not moving!
HELP!
