So, you say it tries to crank yet after a half second the starter kicks out?
I'm confused. The vehicle either attempts to start, or it doesn't.
One thing you can try, is to disconnect the battery for an hour, then reconnect it. That will reset the computer properly. The security light should always blink. It's one of those redundant lights to try to keep thieves away. As the vehicle is now a decade old it wouldn't surprise me if the starter was shot.
Banging on the starter won't do anything. I'd check the wiring, if the wiring is OK (no corroded terminals, wire cracking, etc) then you can see about getting it tested, but for the labour if you can't manage this yourself would be better spent on a new unit.
