2001 Sport Trak starter kicks out, wont crank

The vehicle with no warning of this problem, seems like it tries to crank
then after 1/2 second the starter kicks out. I went through the reset procedure on the ecu and that made no change.

The security light blinks with the key in, but I dont know if thas part of it.
I'd think it wouldt do anythng at all if that was the problem.

The battery is checked and charged.

I could try banging on the starter. Maybe its kicking out on the fringe of going bad?

Any ideas.

Re: 2001 Sport Trak starter kicks out, wont crank

So, you say it tries to crank yet after a half second the starter kicks out?

I'm confused. The vehicle either attempts to start, or it doesn't.

One thing you can try, is to disconnect the battery for an hour, then reconnect it. That will reset the computer properly. The security light should always blink. It's one of those redundant lights to try to keep thieves away. As the vehicle is now a decade old it wouldn't surprise me if the starter was shot.

Banging on the starter won't do anything. I'd check the wiring, if the wiring is OK (no corroded terminals, wire cracking, etc) then you can see about getting it tested, but for the labour if you can't manage this yourself would be better spent on a new unit.

Could be a "lazy " dragging starter . As suggested above , best to get it tested . Might be worth checking ground wire /cable from engine to body also .
