Hey everyone! I'm having a problem with my 2002 Explorer. There was a recall on the back tailgate window. I had it replaced and the frame around the window cracked. Ford says they will not pay for it because the crack was not caused by the window installation and I'm over my warrenty mileage. I'm not buying that at all. I haven't gotten it fixed yet because I wanted to investigate. Please post or email me if you had a problem with the tailgate cracking and if it happened after the window replacement or not. The body shop manager said that the cracks are happening alot, I'm just trying to find out if they are just happening at any time or if it is happening when that tailgate window is replaced. I would really appreciate any responses! Thanks.

I have a 2003 Explorer with the same tailgate crack just below the glass. I have not had the recall work done yet on the tailgate glass. I bought the vehicle used and it had the cracks when I bought it. Apparently the cracks happen at any time from my experience.

I have had this happen my Exlporer was in the on the back window recall. One large crack and several small hair line cracks are starting along the whole fiberglass tailgate just under the window We haven't been to a dealer yet to see what they say but it is not covered on the warrenty.
I don think they are related. I had the recall done also had the cracked "rear applique" replaced at the same time. When I called the Ford dealer to explain the issue, he completed my sentence for me - knew exactly where it would be cracked. The dealer farmed out the repair to a body shop - which has seen a lot of these. It's an expansion - contraction problem, exacerbated by lousy glue Ford uses.

I have a similar problem with my 2002 Explorer, but the crack happened some time after the installation of the struts on the rear window. Mine appear to be related to cold weather, as a huge crack occurred on a ski trip last week. Flagstaff, AZ

I also have a 2002 Explorer,same window recall, 3 days after I got it back,the tailgate cracked straight up and down from the window to the license plate. I let Ford know about it and they gave me the same response. They seem to know nothing about this happening to others but obviously it is.
The same thing happened to me. I have a 2002 Explorer XLT. I live in Renton, WA, about 20 minutes SE of Seattle. Our weather here for the past few days (Feb,15,16,17) has been about a low of 26 degrees Farenheit. Wednesday and Thursday morning, my vehicle was iced over, but not this morning. It felt just a lil bit warmer. Currently, the weather reads as 28 F. I stopped to get gas this morning before work, and approached my vehicle from the rear and didn't even notice it then, so I don't know if it was there at that time or not. When I arrived at work this morning I noticed that the tailgate panel that the ford "applique" is on (Just below the glass) was cracked about a couple inches from the center, with a 1/4 inch gap in between the cracks. I started thinking to myself how and when it could have happened, because there has been no impact to the rear of my vehicle. I didn't notice the crack last night when I drove it. My co-worker who was carpooling with me this morning suggested it might have something to do with the cold weather. I immediately googled "2002 Explorer cracked tailgate panel" when I got to my desk, and sure enough, there are a few forums where they are talking about the same problem. When thinking about it, it was even more weird, because there was no ice on my vehicle today, so I didn't even use my defrost, as I had Wednesday and Thursday, but i don't think it cracked until today. In my case, as I purchased my car used, I don't have warrantly coverage for it, so most likely I will have to pay out of pocket. But I am trying to find the part number for the panel, and also wanted to keep in touch with you and anyone else who had this problem to see how your situation is going. Same situation with us. Ours just happened today. It was fairly cold (around 23 degrees), my son took the Explorer to the car wash and we noticed it when we got home. Nice clean crack from the middle of the window down. It was not there before he went. We had the window fixed several months ago. I will contact our dealer tomorrow to see what they say. I think that this is a Ford problem!
My 02 Explorer has cracked at the tailgate also. The dealer told me that this was common and that unless under factory warrenty that Ford will not fix it and that the customer will have to take care of it. It seems to me that this is not a isolated thing due to all of us having the same thing happen. I contacted Ford via phone and email and let them know what problem I was having. If everyone would do this maybe they will see that this is common and fix it without us coming out of pocket.
