Thumbs down 2002 Ford xlt - Fix or repair daily (FORD)

I have a long laundry list of problems with this blanky suv that has only 102k miles. Window motors, rear end(Stu Evans did the job 15 months later is whining, stick the 12/12 where it dont shine), black box, wheel bearings, alternator, leaking on/off sunroof, seatbelts that dont retract, engine pings(Stu Evans said that it is gas here in detroit, i think not), 3 serpentine belts, window wiper motor, hatchback hinges.... I still owe on the car loan.......

Now Mr Ford does this to me this week:
1.Tranny goes, rebuild: $2117
2. just saw that the right rear coil spring is broke (another 200 plus dollars).

Because of this my summer vacation plans are toast.

Mr Ford, thank you for ruining my summer vacation plans for my 7th and 8th grade kids. I am pretty sure you have made a lasting impression on my kids and their friends.

My advice to any 2002 and newer ford explorer owner, dump the car and never buy suv from ford again.

What year is it? You should have gone to a place like the ring and pinion shop or was it something covered by the dealer? Was it bought new or have a search on carfax done?

Its a 2002 explorer xlt. the new design. Bought used from a dealer with approx 15k on it along with a 75k warranty with it. Tranny just pooped this past sunday, 102k miles on it. Out of warranty. Had it fixed at a reputable transmission shop. This guy is very familiar with this tranny..

Don't feel too bad. I learned this lesson in the 80's. Had a 1978 Mustang II and 1976 F150. Neither had an engine that made it to 70K. Kinda soured me for life.

Re: 2002 Ford xlt - Fix or repair daily (FORD)

I have owned 8 Fords or more that I put well over 200,000 miles on. I am also working on a Dodge Caravan being added to that list with 169,000.

Short of a 1994 Mercury Tracer that shelled out a waterpump, altenator, 2 head gaskets and a head between 36,000 and 49,000, I have had great luck with my Fords.

Note that I have always bought my vechicles with 24,000 miles or less on them, and did a CARFAX. I always buy them with this low of miles so that I can do all the maintenance at the required intervals.

I used a 96 Caravan to tow a 2,000lb trailer up and down the BigHorns in 3 different years- the dealer and all my friends told me I would toast the tranny. Still going at 169K.

98 Mountianeer has 113K and has towed a 6,200lb trailer loaded about 48,000 miles of it's life and is still going for another family vacation this year.

While telling you what great luck I have had doesn't make you feel better, be sure to do all required maintenance and find a good mechanic that you trust.
