About a week or two ago our '03 Explorer (4.0L) started developing a whining sound as the SUV was slowed to a stop. It is still doing the same thing, but finishing off with a "clunk" as the vehicle stops.

Other than this, everything seems normal but that can't be good. Anybody have any suggestions as to what it is doing and what I should do now?

BTW, this is the very first issue we've had with this Explorer. We are very pleased thus far with it (bought it new in '03).

Can you raise it up and listen? Have the transfer case and transmission been serviced?

No, the transfer case and transmission have not been serviced. Vehicle has 66,000 miles.

They're due. See what the fluid in the tranfer case looks like. Metal shavings, burnt, etc.
