On the 2004 and 2005 Mountaineer, are they All wheel drive, front wheel drive, or rear wheel drive?

I believe rear wheel drive & AWD is an option.

From the 04 owners manual

ALL WHEEL DRIVE (AWD) SYSTEM (IF EQUIPPED)
Your vehicle may be equipped with an All Wheel Drive (AWD) transfer
case. With the AWD option, power is supplied to all four wheels
automatically with no need to shift between two-wheel drive and
four-wheel drive. If your vehicle is equipped with the AdvanceTrac
stability enhancement feature, you can change AWD modes, if desired,
by selecting AWD options through the message center.

Thanks for the info. Not for what may be a stupid question....how can I tell if it's RWD vs AWD?

On the left of the fuel guage is a light that should come on when the key is turned on. When running, it only comes on when the AWD is locked on.

As mentioned, AWD was an available option. Front wheel drive was NOT an option on it's own, RWD only with AWD optional. The Mariner has FWD and AWD.
