I just bought a 2004 with 180,000 miles. It has a bad engine due to timing chain letting go. I have found an engine a v6 out of a rolled sport track will the v6 work out of the sport trac to the v6 Explorer? I'm still waiting for a vin # on this rig but I am curious how far back the 4.0 SOHC motor goes into a 2004 Explorer as a direct fit. Car-part list the 2004 as the only engine year when doing a search. I have found the Sport Trac engine does not work nor does the Ranger. I find this pretty stupid but what do I know in comparison to some engineer at Ford that makes these decisions.

I will be picking this up in the next few days. I found some engines on car-parts one with a 105,000 for $1100 and a few for $1000 with 110,000-116,000 miles. I went to a small local yard for another project and found a clean 2003 4.0 SOHC motor that was hit hard in the front fender side swiped. I asked one of the salvage guys if I need to be looking for JUST a 2004 engine non sport trac or will other years work? He told me 2002-2004 will work that the intake needs to be changed on anything other than an 04. Can anyone verify this for me because that 03 has 139,000 miles for $600!! That is a steel of the day if the intake is all to swap out. It is also an "E" vin code eighth digit!

My vin has a "K" in the eighth slot. Does a "K" vin allow a "E" vin code engine to swap? I ran the vin decoder and it doesn't really tell me much about the options available. I went to another forum for Explorer's and Ranger's they say the 4.0 long block from several years will work but 2002-2004 works best with limited switching. I found a 139,000 mile engine with an "E" vin in the eighth digit vin for $600. If the 04 Explorer doesn't come through I found another 03 for $1500 that needs an engine and tranny.

Just finished this today. Took less than a week to pull transfer components to a 52,000 mile 2008 SOHC 4.0 V6 and drop in! Runs like a champ! All the talk about certain year engines and certain vin coding doesn't matter. We used the 08 mustang long block for less money than a matching explorer motor. It's not hard to do this swap.
