Question 2004 Explorer help please

Got home yesterday, all was fine. Had to run back out after dinner, when I backed out of the drive way noticed the ABS light was on and then noticed the 4 wheel drive light was flashing. The ABS light stays on, but the 4 wheel light flashes 8 times every approx. 2 minutes. Its an 04 Eddie Bauer Edition Explorer, 4x4, 93500 miles. Cant think of anything that would connect the ABS and 4 wheel light, any suggestions? Drove it this morning and nothing has changed.

Thanks,
Kevin

Re: 2004 Explorer help please

I bet its a speed sensor. this would especially play into the ABS light, but also the 4x4 light if you have either the AWD system or the "advantrac" stability controll. Both systems rely on speed inputs to function. right now you have no ABS, AWD, or Traction/stability controll.

Often this happens when the wire to one of the wheel speed sensors gets snagged while driving. Infact, I remember doing a recall on some vehicles (maybe the explorer or escape) where we had to install a pigtail extension to the speed sensor wire to accomodate the suspension travel, which would rip the wire apart when going over BIG bumps or when getting some air off a jump.

Have you been hot dogging with that explorer?

Re: 2004 Explorer help please

Thanks for the info. Its still under the warranty, so I should take it by the dealer and have them check it out before it expires.

Sorry, no hotdogging, just driving back and forth to work. Funny sometimes its on, sometimes its not.

Re: 2004 Explorer help please

Took it to the dealer on Friday, it was a speed sensor causing the lights, alas though it was not covered under the warranty, but the other $400+ worth of work they did was covered by it.
