'91 Explorer 4.0 4WD Problem

I've got a buddy w/ a '91 Explorer 2 Door Eddie Bauer 4.0L and now when he goes to shift into 4 wheel drive it doesn't engage properly - it apparently stutters like the wheels aren't rotating smoothly...anyone have any ideas?

Did you ever fix it. It will be the transfer case housing. They were where the selector is located and the cluch fork pulls back creating the noise.
The fix is fairly inexpensive, contact me.
What country was the vehicle in?
