91 Ford explorer tranny problems

I have a 91 Ford explorer with a 92 model motor. The transmission has been doing fine other than a few leaks. Today my wife was driving it and she said she turned to right onto the highway and the motor reved up like there was no transmission fluid then she felt a clunk like something fell out of the car. I have sinced checked the fluid and driveline everything looks ok. could it be the torque converter bolts broke or came loose. And is there a way to check this with out pulling the transmission. We have had the explorer about 3 years and this is the first time the tranmission has given any problems any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 91 Ford explorer tranny problems

We had something similar happen with a cube van as you described. Turned out the fly wheel snapped in two.
