Recently got a "93 Explorer for my 21 yr old. When we checked it out it shut down while idling a few times but always started back up. It didn't do it while on the road just when idling. Well the last few days he said it has been shutting down while on the road. He said the volt meter jumped around a bit. It always starts right back up though. Do I have a simple alternator or battery problem or should I be looking at other things too? This is my first Explorer I need info from someone who may be more experinced and know what I should look for. Thank You.
I'd replace the battery if you don't know how old it is. You should be able to have the alternator tested at Autozone. If the battery is replaced and the alternator is okay and you still have the problem, I'd try replacing the Idol Air Control valve(it's a cheap replacement part). Also it can't hurt to replace the fuel filter and pcv valve and add some fuel injection cleaner to the gas tank.
I recently posted about some problems about my Explorer. Here is the latest trouble update. I had it towed to an electrical expert. He says the missing I was experiencing was because gasoline is being dumped into the engine like crazy and he doesn't know why. We have already replaced the EGR valve and put in another Mass Airflow sensor. Other things have been checked; so far it is all inconclusive. Cables check OK. Nothing is really sticking out as a cause. HELP! Anybody experince this problem?
