confused 94 Explorer-exaust,valves, or injectors

I have a 94 explorer 4.0 v-6, with 125k on it. Recently I've started to hear a ticking sound that seems to becoming from the front drivers side engine compartment. I can't really hear it out side the truck, or at idle. I do hear it
inside the cabin and when giving it gas. I do not hear the ticking when coasting or sitting at a light at idle.

The funny thing is I've had the truck 3 years, and once it got warmed up after 20 minutes or so. If I gave it gas to say pass or speed up it used to make a sound like( metal pebbles in a can) where the transmission is mounted on the floor. I don't get that sound any more. The only other problem that I've had within the last 30 days was an episode of vapor lock, or bad gas that had me wait for 2 hours before it started up.
All advice is welcome. Thanks
