I have a 96 explorer, v6, a/c, no climate control.
The blower stopped working, both in high and low speeds.
I got a subscription to alldata, and started reading up on it, then,
all of a sudden, for an entire afternoon, the blower worked (both high
and low speeds). I stopped and started the vehicle several times, and
it kept working. Then it stopped. Hasn't worked again.

The garage installed a new resistor, but that has done nothing. Where
do I go from here? Suggestions please.

You get a 12v test lite. You put one lead to metal in dash wherever...
other lead to the resistor connector.. IIRC, all should lite the lite when
fan sw on.

If you can get to the blower motor give it a good rap with the handle of a
screwdriver.

If you had high-pitched noise on AM weaker station while heater blower was
running, probably your blower motor brushes bad.

Check the connector at the blower motor itself for distortion (melting). Wiggle the
connector with the blower turned on and see if it tries to work. The blower motor
connector is prone to melting due to resistance at the connections. I've seen vehicles
with the blower resistor housing and connector along with the blower motor housing and
connector all melted, needing replacement of all 4 parts to repair the problem. I 've
also seen this problem travel back into the blower speed switch on the HVAC panel, you
might want to look at that also. The blower motor draws a considerable amount of
current, so any parts that look burned, melted or overheated need to be replaced to
prevent a repeat failure.

It means you follow Tom's advice and look for overheated wiring connectors,
and, if you find none, you replace the blower motor.

Because that 'tap' probably jostled the brushes in the motor... again tune
to a weak AM station and listen for howling interference depending on speed
of blower.

when it quits next time,wiggle plug instead of tapping.if no go then
tap.if go replace brushes or replace motor.did it ever(always) work in
medium speed!?
