'97 4.0L Explorer Oil Change Question - newb

Hey everyone,

I need to help my buddy change his oil in his 1997 Explorer v6 SOHC.

I've never done one before on this vehicle. Searching, I was able to find that 5qts of 5w-30 in recommended, but I couldn't find any torque specs for the oil drain plug and if a new crush washer is required or even used.

Also found a video, but I couldn't tell if it was specific to this model year, and it seemed that the oil shoots out the pan at an angle that causes it to initially hit a suspension component or undercarriage of the vehicle. Any tips here?

Thanks

Generally, a steel oil pan is 25-30 ft-lbs, aluminum is 20-25. As far as oil splash, block it, use a rag, kinda use your imagination. Our car is a pontiac with a 3.8, I've yet to figure out how to change it's oil without making a mess.

You can also use a piece of cardboard as a shield to keep from making a mess.
