97 Explorer SOHC timing chain problems

Code came up with three cylinders miss firing. The engine lifters was making noises. Took the car in to my mechanic and he says it could be the coils or the timing chain is loose. He checked the compression first and the cylinders were fine. So he figures it has to be the timing chain. Tells me it will cost $800 in labor and parts will be extra. What happens if the timing chain is replaced and come to find that the rods are bent and causes more noise ? Is it better to get a rebuilt ?

The only thing I do know is the SOHC has plastic timing belt tensioners. They suck. When ford replaces the timing belt they will put metal tensioners in there place. Should have been a recall

Ask the mechanic if the 4.0 SOHC is an (interference) engine. Which means if the timing gets too far off can the valves hit the piston. If it is not an interference engine you should be fine with just a timing belt replacement.

Re: 97 Explorer SOHC timing chain problems

the funny thing is in america there was a recal on some of the explorers, as the front timing chain guide was self detonating commonly, i have one in my shed that has come apart, luckly no bent valves, just time for a new chain, then to send it to a mechanic to get the timing done, because they hav no marks or keyways, have to hav a special tool(great idea guys)
